My Dear Classmates,
This class bulletin emanates from the central innermost portion of my heart. As a Sacramento Police officer, I have seen all there is to see; nothing I have seen in my former career, has come even close to impacting the inner source of my being, my emotions and my sensibilities as did my meeting with Enrique Foster at the Delano Regional Medical Center in Bakersfield California.
First, allow me to describe the personality I observed. Enrique possesses a very powerful vibrant personality, solid as a rock. His intelligent strong will, friendly nature, and his unwavering goal to get well, instantly becomes apparent upon meeting him; I believe he has willed himself to recover and someday, some way, he will.
As you can see from my road trip fotos, the Regional Center is actually located between Panama Lane and Cecil lane in Bakersfield California; the Regional Center is actually locate closer to Cecil Avenue.
I arrived at the center and was greeted and welcome by Enrique’s guardian angel, Sharon Foster. Sharon is the sister we all wish we had; she will be at her brothers side no matter what she has to do, who she has to talk to, what she has to learn and understand regarding her brother's treatment.
Sharon ushered me in and said "Enrique this is Cecil Callender, from high school, you remember him?" Enrique seemed to get a bit emotional as I walked in and it was obvious he was not expecting to see me. Enrique responded to Sharon's question regarding me by shaking his head up and down, rapidly and with a sense of conviction.
It was apparent to me that Enrique’s communications skills were sharp, quick and flavored with the required emotion befitting the task at hand; he interacts well with the staff and they respect him.
Sharon asked Enrique if he wishes a certain female to visit him and he clearly and emphatically motion “no” with and unmistakable head movement; I was impressed.
When Sharon asked Enrique if he remembered Yolanda Evelyn, the vertical movement of his head was clear and most enthusiastic; his eyes fluttered rapidly indicating a resounding "Yes." Having known Yolanda myself in high school, I joined Enrique in his jubilant celebration of the mention of her name.
Class, Enrique’s facial features are youthful looking. I can only suspect the care of his body all these years has come to serve him well in his hour of need.
It was obvious to me that Enrique enjoys watching his plasma Television on the hospital wall; he drifts away from the talk in the room to keep up with the news. When you sit with Enrique, you become quickly aware that this is a very intelligent person. If he could, I suspect he would argue the pros and cons of the day as well or better than most of us PHS65 members.
As I was about to terminate my visit with Enrique, he looked at Sharon and it was easy to see the way he turned and looked at her Enrique was saying" you got to be kidding me girl." Sharon kept insisting this particular female would be a perfect visitor for Enrique. Then a smile emerged on his face and the deep love he has for his sister, Sharon was all too evident; I was touched by his passion.
Class, I was at the Delano regional Center for over an hour and believe me, this was the best road trip of my life.
So, was this my appointed journey to travel, or was I acting out the script written for me by the almighty? I can only point out once again, the off ramp from highway 99 in California leading to Graces highway and the Delano Medical Center in Bakersfield is: Cecil Avenue; I am blessed by the journey.
